The Roman Empire began as a republic around 500 B.C. It rose to its height around the 1st and 2nd centuries A.D. before its gradual 300 year decline. At its height, Rome achieved some pretty amazing architectural and engineering feats. The remains of the monuments are still grand today. We can only imagine how impressive they would have been 2,000 years ago!
