We crossed from Chiang Mai, Thailand into Laos, and it was definitely our most exciting border crossing to date . . .
Drive to the Thailand border, get stamped out, cross the Mekong in a long boat, get in the visa line in Laos, fill out a new visa form when you realize you have the wrong one, give the man your passport, wait, wait, and wait a little longer while hoping they will call your name so you can pay to get your passport back!
